This tower takes the cake

Brandon, KF6SWL, wrote me in March to ask if he could have a high resolution copy of one of my amateur radio tower pictures.  He saw one that he liked on my ham radio tower project pages. He said that he needed this for his wedding plans! You see, Brandon was planning his groom’s cake.  [...]

Solar panels for sale

I have some solar panels that I need to sell.  These are new-in-the-box Unisolar US-3 "framed" panels.
Ideal for Field Day, QRP or other ham radio activities. The US-3 is rated at 2.68W at 8.1V under ideal conditions. Units have built in blocking diodes. These are in a rugged, weather-proof frame.

Hams assisting in Iowa disasters

Flooding and massive tornado devastation here in Iowa has made life here quite challenging for many.  The sunny skies today are a welcome sight to those building levees, clearing debris, pumping water out of basements and trying to restore some sense of normalcy.
The Iowa EOC amateur radio station has been on the air on [...]

Doing a good deed - the Radio Merit Badge

On Saturday, my dad (KØGVG) and I offered a Radio Merit Badge session for several Iowa Boy Scouts. We believe that, done properly, this is a great way to expose kids (and often their dads) to what could be a first step into the world of ham radio.
Over the past 5 years or so [...]

The guys at AmateurLogic.TV have posted episode 19. Its a tour of the 2008 Capital City Hamfest in Jackson, MS.  Up here in the frozen Midwest we’re still some months before a "real" hamfest  (current temp is -3 deg F  or -19 deg C).  Still, these guys are entertaining and the production quality improves with [...]

Building the K1EL WKUSB Keyer

I’ve posted a page detailing my recent K1EL WKUSB keyer project.  This was one of the best ham radio kit projects that I’ve built to-date. Clear instructions, a decent enclosure, and the dirty work already done (i.e. surface mount IC already mounted!)… resulting in a finished product that works good and looks great.

Ham Radio How-To Videos

N7QJM, Kurt, has created a few "introduction to ham radio" videos and uploaded them to the Internet.  As there are getting to be more and more of these and as I already have a few tips and other resources for newcomers to our hobby, I decided to setup a page dedicated to these intro videos. [...]

A ham radio caucus?

Last night I had the privilege of participating in the Iowa Caucus. As the vast majority of the readers of this blog are outside of Iowa (see my website country statistics), I’m sure many won’t know what a Caucus is or its relationship to ham radio (the primary focus of this blog).
My experience in [...]

HamLinks Ham Radio Toolbar Popularity

The HamLinks Ham Radio Toolbar continues to grow in popularity… with over 1500 installations since its release a couple months ago.  I continue to get emails thanking me for putting this toolbar together and asking for new features (only so many hours in the day, but I’m thinking about a few new features).
The HamLinks [...]
