Poll: How do you buy/sell ham radio gear?

I’ve just added a new feature to the blog… a poll. You’ll find it in the far upper-right column of the blog layout.
OK, I know what you’re thinking. You’ve seen these web polls before, web polls are a dime a dozen, are statistically invalid and don’t add a lot of value.  Perhaps, if you’re [...]

Twitter overload:= poor S/N

Steve, K9ZW recently posted to his ham radio blog about the worth of Twitter. His post hits on the very thing that has kept me away from dabbling in the world of Twitter – I simple don’t have any more bandwidth (time) for either posting (”Tweeting”) or reading about the minutia of day-to-day life.
I [...]

Ameritron’s new solid state HF amp

Ameritron’s 2009 catalog indicates that they will have a new solid state amplifier – the ALS-1300. Over the next 3 to 5 years I could be in the market for a new ham radio HF amplifier and, as I’ve said previously, a solid-state, idiot-proof, point-and-shoot unit might work best for my needs.

The Ameritron ALS-1300 [...]

Icom IC-7600 Press Release

A press release was posted today on the Icom website for the upcoming IC-7600. This rig is the apparent successor to the IC-756 Pro series.
Unfortunately for me, the press release is in Japanese. However, Google’s English translation of the IC-7600 press release does provide some insight as to what the specs will be on [...]

Ten-Tec discontinues TITAN III Amplifier

Ten-Tec has announced that have discontinued the TITAN III amplifier. A simple statement posted on the Ten-Tec website seemed to suggest that the issue had to do with tube availability. The Titan III amplifier was designed with 4CX800A/GU74B tubes.
I agree with some of the comments posted along with the announcement. It would be nice [...]

DXCC through Contesting + LoTW

Even casual contesters can easily improve their DXCC counts by participating in a few international contests. CQ Magazine’s major “World Wide” contests provide a great opportunity to “work some new ones”, even when the propagation indices are terrible. (CQ WW CW for Morse Code enthusiasts and CQ WW SSB for those who prefer “phone”).
I [...]

Contest Log Analysis: CQ WW CW

If you want some additional insight into your contesting efforts, I highly recommend SH5. Dmitriy, UA4WLI, hosts this program on his TR4W (TR for Windows) website. This little known, free, ham radio software utility will tell you things that your current contest logging software may not.
Where did I put my CQ WW CW 2008 [...]

CQ WW 2008 – contest wrap up

Both the SSB and CW CQ World-wide contests are now behind us and it’s time for a post-mortem analysis.
Loyal readers will recall that after my 2007 CQ WW CW effort, I posted a note about what worked and what I needed to improve in future CW contesting efforts.  A year ago, I spent 30 [...]
