200 wpm Morse Code? Are you kidding?
A couple hams in Europe have reportedly broken the 200 word-per-minute barrier in the world of competitive High Speed Telegraphy (HST). How fast is this? Here is an example of the word PARIS being sent in CW at 200 wpm.
Of the seven HST CW-wizards who attempted to break the 1000 cpm (200 words per minute) mark, two managed to do it successfully: Goran Hajo?evic, YT7AW, and Fabian Kurz, DJ1YFK.
YT7AW was presented with a slick Schurr Profi II paddle for being the first (and requiring fewer callsigns than DJ1YFK).
To guys
like me who are trying to increase our meager 250 cpm (aka 50 wpm) max speed, this borders on the super-human. If I had to guess, I would not have thought that anyone could possibly distinguish anything faster than 110 wpm. I’m certain that for most folks, no amount of practice will allow them to get above a speed far below this threshold.
I’ll keep practicing and trying to increase my personal best scores, but this is like being a weekend hacker who sees Tiger Woods score a round in 59… Amazing.
I seriously wonder if guys with this capability were to put some effort into it, would they be able to copy RTTY in their heads?
Congratulations to YT7AW and DJ1YFK. For that matter, congrats to anyone who simply loves Morse Code.
Long live CW.
