Ham radio tower progress

We’re really making good progress on the foundation of the ham radio tower this week. The Anwireless plans allow for two foundation styles:

To make things much less complicated (at the expense of a bit more concrete and some yard space), I’m going with the solid block foundation. So that’s what we’re working on this week - a big block!

Yesterday, Matt Cooper from Cooper & Sons stopped by with his CAT to dig the hole. As the tower foundation is 9′x9′x5′, it would have taken a long time to dig this out by hand. Matt was able to get the job done in about an hour.

Today, Chad Stecker and his crew from Stecker Concrete in Boone stopped by to do the rebar work, lay the forms, and prep work for the tower AND two other projects (a patio and a basketball court). They worked through most of the (hot and humid) day.

The crew will return in the morning to finish the rebar and make the final preparations for the pour which will be Thursday. Now… no rain for a few days and I’ll be a happy camper!

  1. WOW, that looks great, thanks for all the photos. Please be sure to post the finished pics with the actual tower.

    What antennas or antenna are you putting at the top and how high is the tower going to be?

  2. Tower details are:
    * SteppIR 4 Element Yagi
    * ANWireless 70′ Self-supporting tower
    * Cushcraft XM-240 40 Meter 2 Element Yagi (shorty forty)
    * 22′ Mast
    I’ll give a full writeup sometime on each of these.

  3. Wow! I envy you. Here I have to stick to a few verticals and a multi-band dipole mounted on a flat roof, stretching over the homes of three (very friendly!) neighbors…
