My Butternut HF6V Inverted V

Due to the recent ice storm in central Iowa, I think I may have one of the only Butternut HF6V inverted Vs in existence. I’m not sure how (if) the Butternut will recover from the 1″ radial ice - but I am glad the 4 element SteppIR and Cushcraft XM-240 were still in boxes in the garage.

  1. I have to ask did the Hustler ever recover from its little ice problem

  3. I can report that although the Butternut HF6V did look very bad, I think it will be repairable. At its worst point, it was actually touching the ground/snow. After the ice storm, we had a mild blizzard with high-winds and plenty of snow. During that, the Butternut vertical was anything but vertical.

Now that we’re roughly 5 weeks since the blizzard, the HF6V is mostly vertical again. At the bottom section of the antenna, the aluminum tube near the insulator has a 45 degree bend. I might be able to straighten it.

Most of my elevated radials and guy ropes also fell victim to the ice. So, this will be another project as the tower and beams go up this spring.
