Category: Ham Radio: HF Verticals
|
| Description: HF Vertical antennas. Vertical antennas are popular among ham radio operators on all bands. On HF, ham radio operators may choose to sacrifice directivity from other designs (yagi, log periodic array, etc.) in favor of a simple vertical antenna. Arrays of vertical antennas can be designed and built such that directivity (directional gain) can be achieved - giving ham radio operators a powerful option on the low bands (40 meters through 160 meters). Vertical antennas offer ham radio operators a low take-off angle - which is important in making long distance (DX) contacts. Critical factors for successful vertical antennas include the ground below the vertical: soil conductivity plays an important role. If you have poor ground in terms of soil conductivity, using a good radial field becomes even more important to the success of the antenna. Many ham radio operators find that using a radial ring with many quarter wavelength radial wires in a phased array of verticals can match or outperform a decent yagi on a particular ham radio band. |
