The Bencher BY-1 is undoubtedly one of the most popular paddles in ham radio. Nearly every morse code (CW) enthusiast has used a BY-1 at some point.
I have had my BY-1 for almost 10 years. My findings are that this is an ok paddle to learn with, but I wouldn't recommend it for long-term contesting or high-speed use. My BY-1 has required many adjustments - sometimes in mid-QSO. Some guys describe the feeling as loose or mushy. I'd say that the adjustment mechanism design could be better. Changes to spring settings can be unpredictable.
