This is the third K1EL keyer kit that I've purchased and built. Steve (K1EL) does a great job all the way around and I can say that his products have improved over the years - in terms of documentation, fit and finish, support...
Building the K1EL WKUSB took me about 2 hours to build (not bad considering the interruptions I had). This is not a difficult kit to build if you follow instructions and have any soldering skills. If you are stuck, there is a Yahoo user forum to help you out.
Considering that you get:
- a fully functional keyer that easily attachs to your PC via USB (doesn't require a serial port and no converters for your laptop),
- a set of PC utilities to configure and test the unit,
- the ability to use the box in stand-alone mode (no PC),
- rock-solid CW keying from a PC (no latency issues that are common when using a PC by itself)
- a great looking enclosure (I've butchered many kits by putting them into an ugly box)
- compatibility with most logging programs (including the major contesting logging packages)
all for only $64 USD (current price)... this is a bargain.
See my WKUSB construction page.
Using the K1EL WKUSB Keyer
In the heat of battle (contesting and DXing), I've found the WKUSB to be reliable. While using the keyer in the ARRL DX CW contest, the WKUSB worked flawlessly with the N1MM logging package.
Highly recommended.
